Gary Wörtz, MD

Dr. Gary Wörtz is a board-certified ophthalmologist at Commonwealth Eye Surgery in Lexington, KY and is among the most respected and highest volume anterior segment surgeons in the United States.  He is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at his alma mater, the University of Kentucky, where he lectures and instructs residents on refractive techniques.  

In 2015, he was named to the global top 40 under 40 power list by “The Ophthalmologist”, and a few years later named to the Premier Surgeon 300 list of best innovators in ophthalmology.  He has been the principal investigator on numerous FDA trials leading to the approval of new drugs in the ophthalmic space.  His opinions are sought widely by industry, and he lectures frequently at major meetings throughout the globe on an annual basis. Additionally, he shares insights and opinions through his podcast, Ophthalmology Off the Grid, which has received over 100,000 downloads over its 60 episodes.  

Beyond being a surgeon, consultant and educator, Dr. Wörtz is a successful inventor and entrepreneur.  Seven years ago, he founded Omega Ophthalmics with the mission of developing a new platform for intraocular implant technology.  His work has led to the engineering and manufacturing of a novel intraocular implant that has completed proof of concept testing.  In the process, he has been granted 38 patents in the US and internationally, with 19 additional patents pending.  As a key opinion leader in ophthalmology, Dr. Wörtz is well positioned to help companies stay at the forefront of innovation.
